Concert - A World of Bagpipes

Goran Farkaš plays the Istrian bagpipes (Croatia) and is also an accomplished singer and dancer. With a sopela player (Croatian shawm), Goran Farkaš will perform tunes from his region bringing to us rural traditional songs and tunes on the Istrianmih.
Goran Farkaš: mih and voice

Bagpipes tend to be a male-dominated instrument but this has not stopped the four women in Habelas Hainas to create an energetic and renewed version of Galician music, very much influenced by their femininity. The multi-instrumentalists are very active in Galicia and have also played abroad at festivals in France and Norway, bringing their fresh sound to other realms.
Sandra Tamayo: accordeon, Galician bagpipes, square tambourine
Patricia Gamallo: Galician bagpipes, alto sax, square tambourine
Arantzan Alfaia: Galician drums, peruvian box drum, derbuka
Jara Ortiz: voice, bass drum, tambourine

Finally, SOAS Concert Series invited award-winning Northumbrian piper and pianist Andy May and his quartet. Together, the leading folk musicians play a mix of traditional and newly-composed material. The virtuosity of the four can be heard on Andy’s album Happy Hours released on Fellside in 2009.
Andy May: Northumbrian pipes, piano
Sophy Ball: fiddle
Ian Stephenson: Guitar
Colin Nicholson: Accordion
