In memory of Anton Varela (1955-2017)

Os Cempes, one of Anton's pioneering bands:

Anton Varela, 61 years old, passed away today, 25 July 2017, on the day of Galicia. Pioneer musician and bagpipe maker, shaper of the Galician bagpipe revival, Anton was a well-loved and well-known figure in the world of the gaiteros.

Just a few weeks ago, I was translating his own personal account of his life as a musician and maker for the Bagpipe Society's journal, Chanter.

I prefer to leave the last words to him.

I am so sorry to hear that Anton has passed away. I was wanting to get in touch to get a set of pipes for my friend who had one of Anton's pipes for many years and he played them and loved them as did so many people love hearing them. They were destroyed in the fires of Northern California and I want to replace them for Scott Gamble. Scott is from USA, but had lived for 25 years in Scotland and played the pipes he bought from Anton. Now, he doesn't have a set and I want to see to it that he gets a set of bagpipes. If you can help me get this for my beloved friend, then please get in touch with me. Warmly,

This is so sad for bagpipe musicians. I may not know the Mr. Anton Varela personally, but his legacy is something that we should acknowledge forever. he has dedicated his life being part of the organization, and those kind of people are the ones we should admire of. I am sure that the whole community of Bagpipe Society is mourning his death. I hope that at the right time, all of us would be able to move on.
